New York City Artist Paul Hunter

Contemporary original paintings of luminous abstract, modern and minimal landscapes on gold, metal leafs and acrylic paint on canvas

Artist Statement:

I have spent my entire artistic career in pursuit of creating an intensely evocative radiance in my paintings. Most of my paintings depict memories rather than specific sites. These abstract imaginary landscapes are painted on gold and metal leaf to translate an impression of great luminosity. I have lived and worked in New York since moving here in the 1980s after finishing my MFA in Montreal. As an artist, I have experimented with low relief carving, print making, painting, and bronze sculpture. It was at a foundry, looking the newly cast shining metal that it occurred to me to paint directly on a surface that was already luminous. Over time, I perfected a method of applying gold, bronze, aluminum and other metal leaf onto my canvases, and adapted the centuries-old technique of painting on gold leaf to express my own Modernist vision. I use other metals, especially aluminum, as frequently as the gold leaf, and my interest in painting on gold and metal is not primarily in the preciousness or value of the gold (which is in fact just a micro-thin layer), but in the ephemeral quality of the light that emanates from this radiant metal.

Career Highlights:

My work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions in the USA, Canada, Europe, the United Arab Emirates, India, China and Japan.  It has also been exhibited in many museums including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Alternative Museum, the Drawing Center, P.S. 1, the Montclair Art Museum, the Museum of Princeton University, the Knoxville Museum of Art, the Indiana University Museum, the Brauweiler Abbey near Cologne, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Quebec Museum. I have received numerous awards, among them from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, Artists Space, National Studio Program: PS 1, Institute for Art & Urban Resources, Canada Council and Quebec Arts Fellowship.
